Tristan is a generally outgoing guy but feels out of his comfort zone when talking to other witches and wizards. He is a sensitive guy and is particularly upset when he feels left out of something. This is unfortunately something he feels a lot while at Hogwarts since he is a muggle-born and feels like the non-muggles know a lot that he doesn’t know. He doesn’t like being criticised and responds negatively to it rather than accepting it if it is constructive and potentially helpful. He likes to be outside in the open air and likes to play Quidditch though his skill is modest. He can speak French and is quite proud of that fact, he’s also proud of his home country Ireland.
Tristan likes to hand around with his friends and doesn’t value his work too highly in most cases. He feels disadvantaged in that he is muggle-born and so doesn’t think that he can succeed magically no matter how hard he tries. He does exceed at Potions as it is a subject similar to muggle chemistry which he had an interest in as a child. It also doesn’t require great magical prowess, he underestimates himself frequently. He is open to making new friends though doesn’t expect many non-muggles to talk to him because of the laws of the ministry. He has a particular addiction to sugar and it sends him hyperactive for hours until he crashes and falls asleep.

Tristan was born to Mary and Johnny O’Brien on the 20th December. His dad had not been there at the time due to a work commitment in France but his mother hadn’t complained about it. He was given his middle name, Cathal, due to a long running tradition that the eldest male in the O’Brien household has that name. Both of his parents were from rich and professional backgrounds as were their families. He was expected to be the latest in a long line of successful men going back generations. His father and mother often argued over his future career path when he was young as they both wanted him to follow in their footsteps.
In his early life he lived in a large house in Cork and was sent to a private school at just 5 to learn good discipline and how to properly apply himself. He worked hard and spent what little time he had not working with his few close friends at the school. This was the pattern in his life until he was 8 years old. His mother was offered a marginally better job in Dublin and she accepted, the pay was slightly better and there were more promotion opportunities. His dad fully supported the decision and managed to get a job with the same company he worked for in their Dublin office. Everyone was happy, except Tristan.
Torn away from his friends he grew restless and un-cooperative. His teachers noted a lack of attention span and more interest in playing outside then doing his work. His parents didn’t have the time to discipline him at home due to long working hours and instead his grandfather tried his best to look after young Tristan while they were gone. He was a police officer and did his best to teach Tristan respect for others in society. Tristan took some of the lessons in but was still un-cooperative though his grandfather didn’t give up until he died of a heart attack.
After that he was sent away to a largely girl dominated school in Dublin and rarely saw his parents during that time since he lived on the campus. It was shortly after that when strange things started to happen. He had long had an interest in chemistry and while frustrated with a broken Bunsen burner in one lesson he accidentally set his own hand on fire with magic. He passed it off as a weird accident but still carries the scar on his left hand. The next incident was when he was talking to a girl he was friends with and she complained about her phone being broken. He touched it to check and it flickered to life. He, again, passed it off as nothing. There were a few more incidents of random fires and small things like repairing broken objects. He was growing concerned that he was a weird mutant. He was also failing in school, apart from in Chemistry, and so was worried about what school he’d be going to when he turned 11 and left his current school.
Just as Tristan’s parents worried about what school they could get him into when he turned 11 the Hogwarts letter arrived. They were ecstatic that he was going to be a ‘rich and famous wizard’ until they learned about the secrecy aspect. After that they showed little further interest other than to convert their muggle money into a considerable fortune in galleons. At Hogwarts Tristan discovered that being a muggle-born was practically being a second-class citizen. He expected himself to fail in most things and so didn’t try as hard as he should have meaning that he did fail. His one bright patch was in potions in which he excelled.
He has a few close friends at Hogwarts, mainly women and all muggle-borns, and loved to spend time with them. He had a few embarrassing personality issues like claustrophobia, a liking of hugging and affection and an obsession with potion making. These caused him to be a victim of bullying from mainly Slytherins and made his self-esteem lower further. He now likes to stick to the people he trusts and seeks re-assurance from them about his abilities.

roleplay sample:
Jared was happy that Kim felt comfortable enough to talk to him about things that were important to her. He didn’t know anyone that knew him better. Anyone that hasn’t been inside my head that is he thought. ”I don’t know what you see in the mirror everyday but I see something totally different. I wouldn’t want any other girl in my arms.” Jared told her. Something he loved about imprinting was the certainty it gave him. He knew beyond all doubt that Kim was the girl for him and he also knew that he was the guy for her.
”Even if you wanted to leave I’m not sure I could let you go. I’d follow you around the world if I needed to” he told her. After saying that he loved her all the rest of his feelings were easy to get out. He didn’t feel the need to hold back anymore, especially since she actually said the words first. If only I’d known sooner. I could have saved us both a lot of worrying Jared thought as he remembered all his concerns about telling her too soon or not in the right way. ”Yes you are” he murmured as he began to steer their dance further away from watchful eyes.
”Noticed my plan yet?” he asked her teasingly. He wanted to spend time alone with her; Jared didn’t like to be in large crowds of people when he could instead be with just Kim. ”I promise to behave myself, sort of” he added with a smile. He hoped Kim knew that he’d never do anything that would upset her. He also had her dad’s warning in mind, he hadn’t expected to be doing anything that far though so he wasn’t worried. ”I just want it to be just us for a little while. We can do more dancing later I promise?” he asked her sweetly.
